Spezzano Castle, Fiorano Modenese, Emilia Romagna

Once a defensive fort, Spezzano castle was transformed by the Pio di Savoia family in 1529.

In the Salle de Stati (Room of Views), you can travel to all corners of Marco III Pio’s fief via the 56 frescoes painted by Cesare Baglione in 1596; a vivid historical record of the area at the time. Within the castle walls you can visit the Fiorano Museumo of Ceramics which tells the story of local ceramic production, and, somewhat surprisingly, the Town Vinegar Cellar in the pentagonal tower where you can watch the process of making traditional Modena balsamic vinegar.
