Castellengo Castle, Cossato, Piedmont, Italy: All year

The Castellengo Castle, built on the hills of Biella overlooking the town of Cossato and the Cervo River, is a medieval fortress with a long-standing tradition of winemaking.

The castle was built on the hills of Biella, where an ancient grape variety has been cultivated for centuries. Originally built as a fortress by Alberico di Monterone in the 10th century, the castle became the home of the Frichignono family in the 18th century. Its current owners, Danielle, Alessandro and Magda continue the long tradition of winemaking, and often host wine tastings. Today, the castle is home to the Centovigne winery and B&B La Carosera. Explore the 10th-century cylindrical towers on the north and south corners, the frescoed rooms on the Noble Floor, the 17th-century cellars and vineyards, taste the wine, or stay overnight in the 18th-century building.

Fun fact: two roads lead to the castle, one built in the 16th and the other in the mid-19th century.
