If you’ve ever seen photos of the Prague Spring, chances are that they were taken by Josef Koudelka. An exhibition at the Trade Fair Palace, marking 50 years since the uprising, is bringing Koudelka’s photos together.
The Prague Spring of 1968 remains one of the seminal events of the Cold War. A popular uprising against the pro-Soviet government in Czechoslovakia, it was eventually squashed by the military. Despite this defeat, the Prague Spring became a symbol for many of democratic struggle, together with other protests and political movements which made up “the spirit of ‘68”.
Josef Koudelka wasn’t strictly a journalist, yet his photos of the Prague Spring have become one of its most iconic records. Images of flag-wavers, and protesters squaring off with tanks, are now ingrained in our minds as images of rebellion and democracy.
As well as Koudelka’s photos, the exhibition also features archival footage by the film director Jan Němec.
2018 is an important year for Czech history, with several anniversaries taking place. This exhibition is just one of the many ongoing events held by the state Ministry of Culture in celebration of that history.
