Barletta Castle, Puglia

The lofty stone walls and dried-up moat make this Swabian fortress an imposing sight.

The lofty stone walls and dried-up moat make this Swabian fortress an imposing sight. It began life as a noble residence in the 11th century, but over time it was modified, and completed by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in the 16th century to create the fortified castle we see today. It has a long military history, being used right up until the Second World War when an Italian military defence unit was positioned here in 1943. Make sure to investigate the vaulted rooms where the Museo Civico holds medieval and modern day paintings including works by famous italian artists Giuseppe Sticchi and Mattia Preti. Look out for the stone coats of arms in the courtyard, and garner the best views of the Italian coast from the castle terrace.
