Gioia del Colle Castle, Puglia

First built by Richard of Hauteville in the 12th century, today’s castle can be credited to the Emperor Frederick II who redesigned it upon his return from the Ninth Crusade to the Holy Land.

First built by Richard of Hauteville in the 12th century, today’s castle can be credited to the Emperor Frederick II who redesigned it upon his return from the Ninth Crusade to the Holy Land. The pale calcareous stone holds a dark history within its tall walls. It is said that the Princess Bianca Lancia was locked up here whilst pregnant with an illegitimate child. Look out for the carved shapes on the walls of what was believed to be her cell. The ground floor you’ll find the National Museum of Archeology with artefacts from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Ages, such as weapons and utensils, as well as items from the 5th century BC including a Corinthian helmet.
