Mola di Bari Castle, Puglia

Built in 1277 for Charles I of Anjou to defend the city from coastal raids, this castle was designed by the famous royal carpenter Pierre d'Angicourt.

The origins of this castle are a bit of a mystery as there are few records, but this castle was probably built on greek or roman remains. Built in 1277 for Charles I of Anjou to defend the city from coastal raids, the castle was designed by the famous royal carpenter Pierre d'Angicourt. The castle was damaged badly during the Venetian invasion of 1508. It was then renovated under Emperor Charles V who wanted to beef up the defence. When you cross  the bridge that connects the castle to the town, look out for the entrance walls that are squared with stone ashlar that date back to the Angevin period. You’ll see how the castle fulfilled its double function as a noble’s house and a military fortress: the upper floors have private apartments for the king and ruling noblemen, whilst the thick slanted walls protect it from invasion.
