Though he is best known for his portrayal of the culture of Montmartre, the work of Toulouse-Lautrec goes well beyond this cliché.
Post-Impressionist artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) is known for his posters of the late 19th century Parisian night and its pleasures. But this exhibition includes many other works which show that his painting embraced by many other styles. Don't miss, for example, his impressionist paintings and his paintings of racehorses towards the end of the exhibition, with his fabulous interpretation of power and speed.
Since 1992, the date of the last French retrospective of the artist, many exhibitions have explored the ties between the work of Toulouse-Lautrec and the so-called 'culture of Montmartre' of which he was simultaneously a chronicler and an observer: he enjoyed the shows at the Moulin Rouge and in a way he celebrated pleasure and vice. The place itself was portrayed as a place where women enjoyed independence and authority, however paradoxical that may be.
Insatiable, Lautrec quickly perfected the means of communicating the effervescence of the cancan, the hard glow of modern lighting and the fever of a clientele that had given in to excess. Movement breaks down before our eyes, resulting in the most dynamic posters. Don't forget that Toulouse-Lautrec elevated posters to the category of art.
The exhibition includes about 200 works with the intention of re-visiting the artist and identifying his singularity.
