Banksy: The Street is a Canvas, Exhibition, Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid: 3 December 2020-9 May 2021

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

This exhibition is devoted to British political street artist Banksy, showing how he has challenged and changed contemporary art, through a display of 50 of his original works.

The works exhibited at the Circulo de Bellas Artes are on loan from international private collectors and are an example of the wide range of techniques and materials used by the artist to create his works. These include: oil or acrylic on canvas, limited edition screen prints, spray of canvas, stencils on metal or concrete, installations, videos, painted polymer or varnished bronze sculptures and photographs.

The exhibition is designed as an immersion into the world of Banksy, welcoming you to unveil clues about the artist and depicting his extraordinary career, highlighting his best known works.

Banksy’s identity has long been disputed, but it is believed he was born in Bristol, England, due to the amount of his works which have appeared on the city’s streets and trains. The mystery of his identity and the unsystematic appearance of his work adds even more excitement to the bold, often political, statements he makes with his pieces. He is known for uniting poetry, politics and irony in his pieces, which ultimately makes his work so renowned and sought after as they challenge society and transform the world of contemporary art.

This exhibition is both an exciting and unique opportunity to get to know the artist who has become a global phenomenon.
