Myndos Gate, Bodrum

Myndos was an ancient Dorian colony of Troezen, on the coast of Caria in Asia Minor (Turkey), sited on the Bodrum Peninsula, a few miles northwest of Halicarnassus.

In ancient times, Halicarnassus (the old name of Bodrum) was surrounded by powerful defensive walls on all sides. Since that time, only the remains of the gate in the western part of the city have survived to this day - they received the name of the gate of Myndos.

The construction of the walls around Halicarnassus is being treated in the presence of King Mausolus - a historian from the occurrence of this event to 364 BC. The length of the defensive achievements reached 7 km, the gates of Myndos, oriented towards the elevated city, became the main entrances to Halicarnassus.

The gates themselves were formed due to the discovery of towers with a base area of 7 × 8.5 m, behind them there was a level of 15 and a depth of 8 m, as well as a swinging wooden bridge. The ancient Greek historian Ar wrote that the first gates of the three towers were subsequently destroyed.

However, the size of the sufficient city did not last long - in 334 BC, during the siege of Halicarnassus by the troops of Alexander the Great, the eastern entrance was completely destroyed, the western gates of Mindos survived only partially.

Work on the collection of the ancient monument since 1998 - at the same time, large-scale excavations took place here, which helped to partially recreate the original appearance of the structure. Today, the towers, built from one large group of stone blocks, have again acquired their former shape, and some of them have been restored almost to the set height.

A visit to the Myndos gate is a must-see in Bodrum sightseeing tours, but tourists come here not only to look at the ruins of ancient buildings - the hill on which the monument is located offers a picturesque panoramic view of the surroundings.

Entrance to the territory of the monument is free for everyone.
