Lotrščak Tower, Zagreb

Take ‘the smallest cable car in the world’ to get to Lotrščak Tower and get the best bird’s eye view of Zagreb.

This square-shaped tower was built in the 13th century to protect the southern gate of old Zagreb city, Gradec. It was a bell tower as well as defending the city entrance. At night the bell would ring, signalling the closure of the city gates.

In the 19th century during a reconstruction the third floor was completed and windows were added. Nowadays, the entire structure is 30 metres high. The tower itself is 19 metres, the roof, five metres and the dome, six metres.

To get there, take the blue funicular, Zagreb's oldest public form of transport and the world's shortest cable car. Every day at noon, a Grič cannon in the Tower shoots. Climb to the top of the Tower to reach the highest point in the city giving a panoramic view. When you leave you might be tempted to buy a heart-shaped souvenir symbolising Zagreb from a little pop-up stand at the entrance.
