Mirogoj - both a cemetery and open-air museum.
Mirogoj Cemetery is the biggest in Zagreb and was officially opened on the 6th of November in 1876 to replace the existing cemeteries (Saint Roch's Cemetery, Saint Tomas' Cemetery and Saint George's which were overcrowded. The municipality bought the estate of Dr. Ljudevit Gaj, a famous Croatian journalist, writer and politician, to accommodate the new cemetery which is divided into sections for different religions and has different classes of graves.
Besides being a burial ground, Mirogoj Cemetery has become an open-air museum known for its beauty. Two seemingly endless arcades safeguard the memories of famous Croatian figures in memorials. The mesmerising architecture is especially potent in spring and summertime when it is covered in ivy.
