Pasha's Gardens, Thessaloniki

Pasha's Gardens is a fascinating and somewhat mysterious green park near Thessaloniki's old town, known as Ano Poli. Nestled behind the Agios Dimitrios hospital, this hidden oasis is often overlooked and remains relatively unknown to the average tourist.

Once inside don’t miss the peculiar Guadi-style stone structures in partial ruin. The centerpiece is an ornate fountain encircled by a tunnel that leads  nowhere. Other features include a rainwater collection cistern, a sitting area, and a small gate that leads underground. Throughout the park, enigmatic shapes and symbols are dotted around  adding to its mystique.

The exact history and purpose of Pasha's Gardens remain shrouded in uncertainty, leading to various theories. Did it serve as a meeting place or initiation temple for Ottoman freemasons, particularly the Sufis, who were Muslim mystics? Or were Sephardic Jews  involved in its creation? Another theory proposes that the park was once connected to the city's catacombs. In any case, an inscription on a wall indicates that it dates back to  1904.

In the past the garden was grand with plants, flowers and  fountains, providing a picturesque setting to enjoy the city's view. However, migrants who arrived in Thessaloniki in the early 20th century stole the stones from the buildings to construct houses, hugely damaging  the gardens.
