The oldest park in Donji Grad, Zrinjevac, is located just around the corner from the central square
The park on Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square, popularly called Zrinjevac, is the oldest park in Donji Grad (Lower Town) (1892). Originally agricultural land and a livestock fairground, the park was transformed as part of a project by Croatian architect Janko Grahor to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Nikola Šubić Zrinski's death.
Going into the park, you’ll find yourself surrounded by rows of sycamores on all sides with maples and lindens adorning the northern edge. Three fountains, marvellous flower beds and neatly trimmed grass attract people to have to take a rest or have a picnic at any time of the day.
Architectural gems of the Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Romanesque and Classicism surround the park territory. At the heart of the park, nestled among a tree-lined avenue, stands the Music Pavilion, reminiscent of a romantic arbour. This charming spot serves as a venue for various outdoor events, including musical concerts and festivals throughout the year.
At the beginning of Zrinjevac Park, you'll discover a Meteorological Post, a gift from military doctor Dr. Adolf Holzer dating back to 1884. And as you stroll towards the end, you'll encounter busts of prominent Croatian figures such as J. Klović, A. Medulić, K. Frankopan, N. Jurišić, I. K. Sakcinski, and I. Mažuranić, adding a touch of historical significance to the surroundings.
Afterwards, cross the road and continue exploring the sequence of parks in Zagreb. Discover two additional green promenades, starting with Josip Juraj Strossmayer Park, gracefully enclosed by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Library of Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences. Then, continue onwards to King Tomislav Square, embraced by tree-lined pathways with numerous benches.
