The Jewish Cemetery, Ancona

The Jewish cemetery, inside the Cardeto Park is the historic Israelite cemetery and one of the largest and oldest in Europe.

The cemetery was first referred to in a document of the 7th of November 1428 that noted how the notables, elders and leaders of the city of Ancona granted to the Judeis, Sabbatuccio, Venturello, and Mosè di Beniamino, land outside the San Pietro gate for use as a cemetery.

In July 1711, owing to the increase of the Jewish population the community bought another plot of land in the same place, called Processione del Giardino (Garden Possession) from the monastery of San Francisco alle Scala.

In this act the monastery ‘father’ Pelicci Gabriell, states that the ground belonged to the monasteries since 1515. This tract, almost a third of the whole cemetery, stretches to the edge of the cliff, making it highly impressive, even though it has suffered some erosion.

Recently work is underway to recover the memorial stones and catalogue, translate and move them to museums. The translation of many memorial stones has also allowed the reconstruction of family trees of the main Israelite families of the town.
