El Anatsui, one of the most distinctive and renowned artists of our time, is the creative force behind the annual Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern.
Anatsui is known for his iconic metallic sculptures, which gracefully cascade and shimmer, crafted from thousands of recycled bottle-tops intricately woven together with copper wire. Anatsui breathes new life into discarded materials, exploring different themes such as the environment, consumption, and trade.
Born in Anyako, Ghana, in 1944, El Anatsui has spent most of his career in Nigeria. He made his mark with his highly experimental approach to sculpture, using a wide array of forms and materials, including wood, ceramics, and found objects. Since the late 1990s, he has delved into the realm of liquor bottle tops, consistently pushing the boundaries of this medium in innovative ways.
Each installation, is different, reflecting his fascination with the evolving histories of the objects he turns into glistening artworks.
