To coincide with the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Musée Marmottan Monet, is exhibiting over 100 sports-related artworks from collections around the word Spanning Impressionism to Cubism, (from 1870 to 1930) it explores sports through artists such as Monet and Degas.
The exhibition delves into the ethical dilemmas and aesthetic dimensions of how artists such as Monet, Degas, Caillebotte, Toulouse-Lautrec, Eakins, Richer, Maillol, Rodin, Bellows, Lhote, Delaunay, Metzinger, and Gromaire perceived sports.
The works include a wide range of sports, from the elitist such as horse-riding, sailing, and fencing to age-old activities such as wrestling, boxing, and ball games. It also examines the symbolic significance of the artist as a sports figure, embodying traits of determination, endurance, and resilience.
