The walls of Ferrara: an impressive defensive enclosure embracing history.
The walls of Ferrara are one of the best-preserved examples of medieval fortifications in Europe. Designed and constructed by order of Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, between 1492 and 1559 these monumental walls are a masterpiece of medieval engineering.
Stretching approximately nine kilometers, the walls surround the ancient historic center, creating an impenetrable barrier against potential threats.
The walls include watchtowers, bastions, and impressive gates like the renowned Gate of the Angels and Porta Paola, each with its history.
Over the centuries, the walls were modified to adapt to the needs of the time. During the 16th century, in particular, they were extended to include new residential areas and the Este family's gardens.
In 1995, the walls of Ferrara were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For a panoramic stroll or cycle, steeped in history, you can’t beat the city walls.
