The Monumental Cemetery of Certosa in Ferrara

This cemetery, founded in 1452, originally served as a Carthusian monastery.

During the 19th century under Napoleonic rule, the monastery was suppressed and subsequently transformed into a monumental cemetery. Since then, it’s biome the  resting place for many prominent figures of the city.

The distinctive feature of Certosa is its eclectic sepulchral architecture. The tombs and monuments reflect various artistic styles, from neoclassical to Gothic.  Some majestic mausoleums are true masterpieces, testifying to the dedication to commemorating the deceased through art.

Many of the graves in Certosa commemorate illustrious figures from Ferrara's history. Among them, you can find the sepulchers of renowned artists, scientists, politicians, and nobles.

Don’t miss the Melchiorri Chapel, an architectural gem with a decorated façade and frescoed interior. The chapel is dedicated to the memory of the Melchiorri family.

The Garden of the Righteous, dedicated to those who, during World War II, saved human lives at the risk of their own. This symbolic space recalls the heroism and compassion of those who acted in challenging times.
