Paintings, photographs, sculptures, Zhang Dali experiments with all forms of art in this exhibition at the Palazzo Fava.
In the 90s, he was a student in Bologna and there he learned about graffiti and took it back to China with him. Now the student has become the master, returning to present his own exhibition. Like the title, he captures China through its political and economic changes, using a wide variety of forms such painting, sculpture, graphics etc. Throughout the exhibition, he maintains a close human connection, depicting topics such as the manipulation of fellow citizens by the state party.
The tone of the exhibition changes rapidly, with each of the nine sections tackling different ideas. One moment he uses graffiti and demolished buildings to show the problems of modernisation, then he shifts to the more delicate medium of cyanotype, tracing out outlines of nature and figures. But perhaps this is another layer to the idea of metamorphosis: changing tones within the exhibition itself.
