Rue des Rosiers, Paris

The Rue des Rosiers (or 'street of rosebushes') is the heart of the Jewish quartier in the area of the Marais. Cobbled streets and old-style streetlamps welcome you down the street filled with Yiddish bakeries with glowing glazed loaves in the lovingly decorated windows.

The street also has lots of falafel shops, all hotly competing for the attention of an eager lunchtime clientele. Parisians flood here on national holidays, as some of the shops choose to open these days.

Sadly the street has not escaped the "gentrification" of the Marais district. The most notable example is Chez Goldberg, a no-frills, authentic  Jewish restaurant Founded by Jo Goldenberg, who lost his parents and all his sisters in Auschwitz, it became a symbol of resistance and revival, a meeting place for Holocaust survivors and former resistance fighters.  In 1982 it hit the international headlines when six people (including two Americans) were killed and 22 injured, in a terrorist attack,  orchestrated by a splinter group of the PLO.

In 2006 the restaurant was closed  "for Health and Safety issues" whereupon the site was "requisitioned"  by a trendy fashion brand. It closed soon afterwards when it failed to keep up with the sky-high rents, now typical of the area.
