São Roque Park, Porto

Public park featuring a playground, gardens & grassy areas along with a popular hedge maze.

The São Roque park extends over 4 hectares and was acquired by the Municipal Council of Porto in 1979 by the Cálem family.

The garden was opened to the public on July 20, 1979 and has since become an authentic green lung of the eastern part of the city of Porto. At that time, several sculptural works were installed in the park and a chapel was located up to then in the Largo Actor Dias.

Its layout is terraced, with the characteristic atmosphere of a romantic garden, with views, a wrought iron fountain and a lake in a cave. it is also equipped with small granite constructions, once a working house now adapted to new functions. In the upper area there is a leafy and fresh eucalyptus forest. Its characteristic symbol is a beautiful labyrinth of hedges which, seen from an upper floor, gives it an excellent landscape effect. Its levels range from Travessa das Antas, where it also has an entrance, to Rua de São Roque da Lameira, where the old manor house dating back to 1792 is located.
