Rediscovering the Mediterranean, Exhibition, MAPFRE Foundation, Madrid: 10 October 2018-13 January 2019

The MAPFRE Foundation is taking a look into what it is about the Mediterranean Sea that has attracted so many French and Spanish artists over the years.

You can admire great works from the likes of Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Cézanne, Renoir, Signac, Matisse, Bonnard Soralla and Pinazo. Although all these artists and many others have taken inspiration from the Mediterranean, they have always portrayed it in a beautiful variety of different ways, each considering it from an individual and unique perspective.

The Mediterranean has also proved crucial to many artists careers, with Claude Monet, Matisse and Van Gogh, for example, relying on its waters to travel to new places and discover new sources of inspiration. Meanwhile, Sorolla and Pinazo have used the Mediterranean’s shores and beaches as symbols to relay their own themes and messages.

The Recoletos Exhibition Hall was built between 1881 and 1884 by the architect Agustin Ortiz de Villajos. Rediscovering the Mediterranean is displaying 143 different works spanning over different continents and focusing particularly on contemporary art by French, Spanish and Italian artists.
