Humberto Rivas, Exhibition, MAPFRE Foundation, Madrid: 21 September 2018 - 5 January 2019

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

Back when he started out, Rivas’ work in was central to getting photography recognised as an art form. Previously,  it had largely been ignored in favour of more traditional art, however Rivas felt strongly that photography provides a new perspective on modern life so this exhibition invites to consider reality in a completely different way.

Rivas was born in 1937 in Buenos Aires and despite growing up in an environment where no real interest was shown in art, he became fascinated by painting and film from a very young age. When he turned 17, he started studying drawing and painting and eventually got his first camera – a 35mm Argus with fixed optics. In 1960 he became a photographer for the Di Tella Institute and towards the end of the decade progressed to opening his own commercial studio.

However it was when he moved to Barcelona, following the 1976 Argentinian coup, that he began exploring landscapes, interiors and still-life. Themes that Rivas explores in his work are the passing of time, as well as the effects and legacies of culture and memory.  At this exhibition you can see for yourself the way that he adapts his photographic style to the scene in front of him, capturing a snapshot that perfectly conveys his motifs.

The MAPFRE Foundation frequently holds photography exhibitions in its Barbara de Braganza Hall including four annual displays by internationally reputable photographers.
