The museum, first opened in 1833, has collections ranging from the prehistoric, Ancient Greece, Roman to Medieval.
It has one of the largest archaeology departments in the world and is considered a national leader in the field of archaeological research. Exhibits in the museum include: a great auk, fragments of St Cuthbert’s coffin, coins from Hadrian’s wall and an admission card to Nelson’s funeral, amongst many others.
