The museum tells the history of the surrounding area, including the life of novelist George Eliot, and displays a unique collection of artwork.
The collection contains over 15,000 objects and photographs with artefacts from across the globe, as well as 150 years of local memories from the borough, belongings of the rich and famous, and fossils from over 150 million years ago. On top of the changing exhibition programme which the gallery runs, there are permanent exhibitions on display for you to discover, including ‘George Eliot and the Writing Room’, ‘Local History’ which highlights the borough’s connections to the coal mining industry and the ‘Picture Gallery’ which showcases the museum’s art collection.
