People's History Museum, Manchester

This is the national museum of democracy, telling the story of its development in Britain.

Here you can learn about, be inspired by and get involved in ideas such as equality, social justice, co-operation and a fair world for all. The museum, which is the UK’s only museum entirely dedicated to the stories of the revolutionaries, reformers, workers, voters and citizens who championed for change, holds the largest collection of political material in Britain. Some of the items include: banners, badges, posters, artwork, cartoons, placards and personal items amongst others. There are over 450 historic and contemporary banners on display, including the world’s oldest trade union banner - the 1821 Tin Plate Workers Society banner, and over 2,000 political posters. You can also see personal items from key politicians and political activists, including Labour Party leader Michael Foot’s ‘donkey jacket’ and radical writer Thomas Paine’s desk.
