Arsenale Venezia, Venice

Venice has always been known as an important naval outpost in Europe, and the root of this reputation for naval prowess stems from the Arsenale Venezia, the massive shipyard and boat construction site that has fuelled Venice’s navy since the 11th century.

The manufacturing process pioneered at the Venice Arsenal, and the sheer quantity of ships produced at the site, were what made it so famous. In fact, the assembly line at the Arsenal was the largest manufacturer of any product in the world until the Industrial  Revolution, thanks to the huge amount of workers employed (16,000 at the height of production) and the patented mass production process used at the site.

Since World War I, the naval yard has halted production of ships, although it is still an outpost for the Italian Navy and a major tourist attraction in Venice. Today you can visit the public areas of the Arsenal and view the many interesting architectural features of the site, including the towering stone walls surrounding the shipyard, the Classical Revival gate known as the Porta Magna, and the large Greek lions flanking the entryway. The Biennale exhibition in Venice also takes place every other year at the Arsenal, making it a popular gathering spot for artists and local Venetians.
