The Piazza San Marco, or St. Mark’s Square in English, is the largest and most visited square in Venice, a historical, political and cultural centre for Venetians and visitors alike.
Arrayed around the magnificent Basilica di San Marco, the square dates to the 9th century AD at the height of the Venetian Republic. Although the Basilica, the iconic Byzantine church, is undoubtedly the focal point of the piazza, severally other equally significant buildings surround the square.
Other must-see landmarks around the square include the striking reconstruction of the Basilica’s bell tower, or the Campanile, the imposing Gothic edifice of Doge’s Palace and the Napoleonic Wing which flanks it, and the towering columns dedicated to St. Mark and St. Teodoro which welcome you into the square. Of course, a visit to Venice wouldn’t be complete without stopping at one of the fine caffès along the edge of St. Mark's square and sitting down to watch the square’s famous pigeons like a true Venetian.
