Architekturzentrum, Vienna: All Year

The Architekturzentrum Wien is a museum in Vienna, in the Museumsquartier.

Vienna’s architekturzentrum is in the museumsquartier, and is a centre for exhibitions, events, and research into all things architecture. The permanent exhibition shows the history of Austrian architecture from the mid-19th century up to the present, and there are always temporary exhibitions going on too.

It isn’t just a spot for architecture buffs either, it’s pretty accessible and there are many events, from kids’ workshops to formal seminars. The museum is divided into different themes, so you can easily get to grips with different stages of viennese architecture and urban design, and these are paired with a timeline of world history to give it all a bit more context. The information also outlines how politics and social issues have influenced architecture, though much of what you’ll see is building plans and photos. While lots of the information focuses on the important buildings of Austria, there is also a huge amount to see on everyday life in Vienna and the homes people have lived in over the last few centuries.

It’s a small space, which can get pretty crowded, but it’s an interesting place to visit for an hour or two. There’s also the CORBACI cafe/restaurant inside, which is beautifully decorated and has a menu full of viennese dishes.
