"The Courtauld Collection. A Vision for Impressionism", a new exhibition within the Louis Vuitton Foundation, will take place from February 20 to June 17, 2019. Exploring Samuel Courtauld's role as a 20th century collector, this landmark exhibition will showcase his extraordinary collection, which will be exhibited in Paris for the first time in over sixty years.

About the author:

English industrialist, he is generally remembered as an art collector, Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947), founder of the Courtauld Art Institute, and the gallery with the same name, played a fundamental role in Cézanne's recognition in the United Kingdom, building one of the largest collections of the painter's work, including the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, with its large pines.

Due to his Huguenot origins, having lived on the Atlantic coast of France, Samuel Courtauld's ties with France are deep, and it was only in the 17th century that he emigrated to London. From silversmiths to silk producers, the development of a new aesthetic fibre compared to "artificial silk" has made the company of its ancestors one of the largest textile manufacturers in the world.

Having completed his apprenticeship in France, it was only in 1921, during the family succession, making him the new president of the company, that Courtauld frequently returned to Paris to buy impressionist works of art from French merchants. After his death, the Orangery organized a commemorative exhibition in 1955, marking the last time his works were actually seen in Paris, with the presence of the Self-Portrait in Van Gogh's bandaged ear.

About the exhibition:

Gathering about a hundred works that belonged to Courtauld, the exhibition will contain watercolours by William Turner, works that belonged to Stephen Courtauld, his brother, and will highlight Courtauld's major and visionary role in shaping the public's taste for impressionism in the United Kingdom.
