Chepstow Castle, Chepstow

Chepstow Castle is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain.

Construction began in 1067 above cliffs on the River Wye. In the 12th-century the castle was used in the conquest of Gwent by the Normans.

However by the 16th-century its military importance had waned and by the 18th-century it had fallen into decay. It is managed by Cadw.
