Between 1935 and 1945, this was the headquarters of the Cologne Gestapo. In 1988, it became the city’s NS (national socialist) documentation centre.
It’s a 10-minute walk from the cathedral. The name is based on the German phonetic pronunciation of the building owner Leopold Dahmen’s initials. He rented the building to the Gestapo, who altered it for their own purposes, including adding ten prison cells in the basement, where there are 1800 wall inscriptions made by the prisoners. The permanent exhibition tells the story of life in Cologne during the Nazi era and there are also a variety of temporary exhibitions and events.
