Castles of Cannero, Cannobio, Piedmont, Italy: All year

An impressive set of medieval ‘floating’ castles in Cannero, Northwest Italy!

While these ‘floating’ castles are too unsafe to be visited, the view of them rising from the lake’s water is just as fascinating from a boat as from the shore of the Cannero Riviera. On the eastern islet you can see  the castle’s enormous walls and on the western islet the destroyed tower.

The castles are the ruins of the Rocca Vitaliana, a fortress built by Ludovico Borromeo in 1519 to protect the land from Swiss raids. The  fort was built over the remains of a 12th-century castle, owned by the powerful and cruel Mazzarditi family, who maintained power over the region of Lake Maggiore through terror, violence, and crimes.
