The Royal Castle of Moncalieri, built on a hill guarding the River Po and the town of Turin, is a well-preserved fortress with a long and fascinating story.
This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the oldest Residences of the Royal House of Savoy. Originally the Savoy family built the castle for protection around 1100, but later Carlo di Castellamonte extended the fortress and redesigned its interior. The castle was adored by many members of the family, including Maria Antonietta of Spain, King Victor Emmanuel II, Queen Marie Adelaide and the princesses Clotilde and Laetitia. Explore the Grand Staircase of Honour built by Carlo Randoni between 1820 and 1822, the 18th-century Royal Chapel, and Maria Letizia’s apartments with its 18th-century painted ceiling and King Victor Emmanuel II and his wife’s apartment on the ground floor.
