This fortified palace stands on the remains of a Norman castle. Now only one of the four Norman towers remain after the despotic Prince Charles I De Mari had them demolished and replaced with the more modern palace that we see today. Built out of local limestone, there are 360 rooms, of which around 100 are used as offices. You can trace the building’s turbulent history at the archaeological exhibition in the 16th-century grand hall, and picture medieval life by wandering the balconies, tower, and opulent staircase. Look out for the apotropaic masks, displayed to ward off evil influences.
