Criccieth Castle is between two beaches in Gwynedd, on a peninsula. It was built by Llywelyn the Great but was heavily modified following its capture by English forces of Edward I in the late 13th century. In 1404 Welsh forces captured the castle under Owain Glyndŵr and set it alight, with some stonework still showing the scorch marks. It is maintained by Cadw.
