Charlie Chaplin, Philharmonie de Paris, Exhibition, 11 October 2019 - 26 January 2020

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

The works of silent cinema’s master is on display at Philharmonie in Paris, until January 26th 2020.

This exhibition offers a new light on Chaplin’s work, especially in its musical dimension as well as in its close relationship to dance, rhythm, the illusion of speech and sound, which were all deeply coordinated into his works.

After growing up in a poor area of London, Caplin got recruited at the age of 18 by Fred Karno, one of the biggest names in cabaret at the time. After touring with Karno’s company, the founder of Keystone Studios discovers Chaplin, and makes the switch from music-hall to cinema. He quickly rises to fame and becomes well-known all over the world. When cinema changes from dumb to speaking in 1927, Chaplin starts using music to introduce more gags into his works.

The exhibition shows Chaplin’s journey – from music-hall to cinema, to dance, to composition – in an audio-visual way to provide a better insight of Chaplin’s work and life.
