Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Matera

The fountain in the middle of the irregularly-shaped Pizzia Vittorio Veneto is fed by huge cisterns under the ground with excavations in the square itself give you an insight into the engineering marvel. It's also the perfect place to enjoy a drink and watch the world go by!

It was previously called Piazza Del Plebiscito but   also known as Fountain Square because  of the  Fontana Ferdinandea, which was  restored by King Ferdinand II of Borbonenel in 1832 and was originally  at the foot of the hill above the castle.

This central  square has  Renaissance and Baroque facades which have been  transformed into homes. It is  overlooked by the  Church of San Domenico, the 18th-century Annunziata Palace and the Fountain of King Ferdinand. There are  monumental  tanks under the square,  The Palombaro Lungo, built  in 1832 to collect water from the hill above the castle ”De Montigny,  which you can also visit.
